Lowville, N.Y., September 2nd, 1908
Dear Cousin Effie: -
Your letter did not reach me until my return from an absence of some time from home, and this is my first opportunity to reply. I will be very glad to advise you in regard to any matters you may have, but fear that my engagement will prevent my taking charge of any litigated matter. My official duties as County Judge and Surrogate I find so onerous that I am driven night and day and there is a prospect of my renomination next week, and if so I will have to cut out everything possible. Indeed I am daily obliged to decline business matters from want of time to give them proper attention. However, as I have said, if you will write me the nature of your business, I will advise you. If you have matters that will require much time I think you had better place them in Mr. Robert A. Shaws hands, as you suggest. He is a fine fellow and a most reliable lawyer. I think a letter addressed to him at 41 Park Row, New York, N.Y., would reach him.
Assuring you of my readiness to do anything for you within my power, I remain,
Very truly yours,
Esqr. J.K. Mercell
